At Toronto Synchro Club every season we award athletes of distinction in our competitive program in the following 5 categories:

Rookie of the Year

Most Improved

Burrows Award

Coaches Award

Kathryn J. Edwards Award

Check out the descriptions along with previous Toronto Synchro recipients of these awards and runner ups. The 2011-2012 season athlete recipients will be awarded at the TSSC Year End BBQ on June 13th 2012.

New this year was the awarding of an Athlete of the Year from Synchro Ontario to each club. Toronto Synchro Swimming Club nominated Mali Tse as the recipient of this award for the 2011-2012 season. It was awarded to her at the OOAGSSC banquet. Congrats!

Rookie of the Year To be awarded to a swimmer who is new to the competitive program. This swimmer displayed outstanding strength, determination, and commitment throughout the year. She has shown initiative and great personal achievement.

2011 Winner: Alexandra-Philp Reeves

2011 Runner Up: Kali Karos

Most Improved To be awarded to a swimmer who has shown outstanding improvement in areas that may include attitude, skill level and performance level.

2011 Winner: Jenna Gionet 2011

Runner Up: Haley Grennell

Burrows Award To be awarded to the swimmer who maximizes her abilities, exhibits the proper attitude in practice and competitions and is a true student of the sport.

2011 Winner: Michaela Spivak

2011 Runner Up: Gillian Grant-Allen

Coaches Award To be awarded to the swimmer who exemplifies a winning attitude. This attitude must be consistently demonstrated throughout the season and will include the following traits: positive team & individual spirit, attitude, and leadership. A good attendance record, a good work ethic, and great sportsmanship on and off the pool deck.

Kathryn J. Edwards Award This award will be given to a valuable athlete in the club. This athlete will be considered valuable due to excellent and well-rounded performances, ability to elevate their teammates’ performances, leadership qualities on and off the pool deck, and attendance and attitude

What to Bring:

Land – T-shirt, shorts and running shoes

Ontario Open Age Group Synchronized Swimming Championships

This past weekend synchro athletes from across the province of Ontario came out to compete at the Ontario Open Age Group Synchronized Swimming Championships at the Etobicoke Olympium Pool. Toronto Synchro Club sent 31 athletes to this competition to compete with 6 outstanding routines and brought home 2 silvers, a Fourth and Fifth place, and a lot of personal bests.

Starting the weekend off with spacing on Thursday morning everyone took to Etobicoke early in their TSSC blue for a full dress rehearsal. In the evening athletes gathered for the annual banquet where the girls along with their coaches had a great time dancing, dining and enjoying the chance to celebrate the past season with each other.

Mali Tse from the Green Team was awarded Athlete of the Year and nominations for Coach of the Year went to Amanda Cira of the Blue Team and Volunteer of the Year to Kirstin Sixt for her efforts in pulling off the TSSC Rec Meet back in February along with numerous other projects in previous years for the club. Congratulations!

Friday was filled with figures from 7am – 9:30pm at night! Our athletes took to the pool in their respective age group categories to compete and leave it all in the pool. So many set personal bests in the pool and it was great to see so many of our athletes really own up to their training this season and making every figure count. A special note to Erin O’Neil who took home silver in AWD figures.

Saturday morning the entire club had one final practice at UofT. A pump up practice and an opportunity for some last-minute camaraderie amongst our athletes. This practice helped work out a lot of nerves and set us up for success in the afternoon at the Olypium.

Off to gelling parties the two 11-12 age group teams arrived at the pool first to compete. Competing against 23 teams across Ontario the Gold Team coached by Kim Davis finished in 18th place and Blue Team coached by Amanda Cira finished right behind them in 19th place. Both teams had phenomenal swims and set our older girls up for a successful evening at the pool. With both teams being some of the youngest registered in the age group category it is amazing to see how close the competition was for all of the teams with only a couple of points separating them all.

Shortly after our 13-15 year old teams hit the water to compete. First up was the Purple Team coached by Emily Hamilton and Danielle LoPresti. Competing in the same category the Green Team coached by Nicole Lowden and Julia Thornton swam near the end of the age group. With both teams having clean, strong swims with tons of great facial expressions and charisma the teams walked away finishing in 20th and 22nd respectively in their age group. The Purple Team was the youngest registered team in the category and can look forward to several more years in this age group category. Many athletes on the Green Team have a couple more years in this category as well to and we look forward to seeing the great momentum they picked up near the end of this season continue on into next!

Finals on Sunday closed off with a lot of touching moments. Erin O’Neil competed her Athletes with Disability Solo coached by Ellen Wakarchuk and Melinda Jacobs. To put it simply her swim was phenomenal. Faced with a lot of personal adversity this past season Erin’s swim was inspiring and also brought home a silver medal! It was presented to her by members of the Canadian Olympic Team headed to the London 2012 Olympics! Check it out!

Closing off the competition in the final team event with the last draw of the day was our resident White Team coached by Laura Mouck and Valarie Hould-Marchand. Swimming their snake routine to crowd roaring applause the team took home a fifth in routine and fourth in championship out of 9 teams.

Congratulations to all of our competitive athletes, coaches and parents at TSSC! We hope that you continue to enjoy the company of each other for the remaining few weeks of this season and we’re looking forward to seeing some final great swims at the Watershow from everyone and Trilliums for our youngest swimmers before the seasons done. At the Ontario Age Group Championships Sunday May 20th 2012 Jo-Annie Fortin, Karine Thomas, Tracy Little and Erin Wilson from the Canadian national team will spend the afternoon signing autographs at the Etobicoke Olympium Pool.

Be sure to come & get a picture with them, and wish them luck in London at the 2012 Olympic Games!

TSSC Pre-Competitive Team Update

This past weekend our two Toronto Synchro Club pre-competitive teams went to their first ever routine meet in Oshawa, ON. This was an exciting competition and the girls swam hard and performed extremely well.

Our 9-10 year old team coached by Ellen Wakarchuk ended up 10^th with a score of 42.5833 and our 11-12 year old team coached by Laura Mouck came 3^rd with a score of 50.6667.

Congratulations to both of these teams and keep up the great work!

TSSC Try Synchro 2012

Toronto Synchro club is hosting our annual TRY SYNCHRO NIGHTS! We encourage everyone – boys, girls, men & women aged 6+ to come out and give it a try. These nights are all FREE instruction based swims provided by our awesome TSSC coaches. There will be fun lessons and games on land and in the water to get more familiar with what is synchro. See below the dates, times and locations for the 5 FREE days to Try Synchro dates. Everyone who participates will walk away with a TSSC bracelet.

Yellow Balloon Projects – Nicola’s Tri for Kids

Attention! Nicola’s Tri for Kids is happening on June 10th 2012. This is a cause that is very near and dear to some family members of TSSC as they lost their adorable 2 1/2 year old to complications from a bone marrow transplant a few years ago and this tri was established so that hopefully it doesn’t happen to others and to honor her all too short life.

It is a totally awesome event – the kids have a blast and can enter as individuals or teams. They can wear life jackets for the swim and training wheels are a-ok for the ride. Emily, Hannah, and Lauren from the Blue Team have all participated in this great event in the past.

Hilton Invitational | Synch @ York U

Congratulations Toronto Synchro Club on a very successful weekend at the Hilton Invitational Meet hosted by Synchro Ontario!

In just 2 short weeks from when we left Regionals at York University we were back again taking to the pool with new changes and strong swims! Our resident 11-12 age group soloist Lauren G coached by Danielle took to the pool Friday afternoon to compete in Espoir, a 12 & U pilot project, and competed her solo routine and figures. Coming away with strong figure scores and encouraging feedback from judges on her improvements since Regionals, Lauren will be working to fine tuning her solo for Variety Village Invitational and Trilliums.

Starting things off first thing Saturday morning was our White Team coached by Laura and Val to compete their snake routine in the 16-20 age group category. The team took home with them a bronze medal for their swim and will be working towards strengthening their changes for their final swims at Variety Village and Age Groups in May.

Mid morning the pool became packed with the 13-15 age group category and our Green and Purple Teams took to compete. Swimming their gypsy routine the Green Team coached by Nicole and Julia had a significantly stronger swim than at Regionals. Rounding off the category the Purple Team coached by Emily and Danielle had a powerful swim. With positive feedback from judges on improvements for both teams in such a short period of time the teams will be working on fine tuning their routines for the final 2 competitions of the season in May.

Saturday late afternoon we had our youngest competitors in the 11-12 age group category take to York pool, the Gold and Blue Teams. Up first to swim (again!) was the amazing 4 person Gold Team coached by Kim. The girls swam their season’s routine with amazing presentation and big cheers. Followed shortly after was the Blue Team coached by Amanda. The girls had an amazing swim that had that feel good lasting impression. With grins from ear-to-ear the swim was so good that the team took home 5th place in their age group!

Finishing off Sunday our 13-15 duet pair of Emma and Haley swam their clown routine in a packed age group category. Topping their Regionals swim by a point the girls will be working on really making their routine sing for Variety Village, their final competition performance of their routine.

Congrats to all of our athletes on the successful completion of the Synchro Ontario Hilton Invitational!
